I personally find ACS appaulling it takes more than nice new buildings and pretty plants to make it a good place let s start with customer service... if the shelter manager and her 3 supervisors are all cut from the same cloth, which they are ACS will never become no kill. I have personally heard the shelter manager belittle her staff in public, the adoption supervisor could care less if you are there or not and let's just say the 2 kennel supervisors do as little as they can. How do I know? I used to volunteer there, watch Sabrina swoon over a certain vet, NEVER do her job unless it is to act like a witch. Most of the kennel staff are out back talking/smoking and doing nothing while dogs are having seizures and dying in cages at times I've seen dead dogs lie in cages all morning while everyone has a break. You don't see the unpaid volunteers out there. What does Shelter manager Jacy do? She lies all day long and sits at her computer blairing her music and surfing the net and gossiping. How ACS hasn't been sued because of her I have no idea. I have kept scilent and watched her lie OUT RIGHT like no truth at all to her story and she KNOWS it. From what I understand the Assistant director and the shelter manager spend the majority of thier time trying to cover thier own tracks. Meanwhile they have lost great employees left and right . Oh yes and the so called foster/rescue coordinators... Heather and Athena did little to nothing. Heather is busy "flirting" with everyone and having a horrible attitude with everyone else and talking about how busy she is and talking about other people while she does absolutely NOTHING productive. She has done nothing new for that place. Athena, although friendly for the most part was pretty darn lazy. So the Chihuahua's should have gone ANY where but there I hope the new director makes changes so that some of us volunteers will want to come back and you get NEW or your past GOOD staff back!

My two cents on this! Glad that they sre safe. Too many times this unfortunate situation occurs to innocent animals. The cost to adopt is not high when you consider every service that is provided by, ACS, ADL, Humane Society. We adopted a Terrier /Cattle dog mix from the humane society and he is a very loving and happy dog. But, momma will not let me take in anymore. That was a battle in itself. But I see as each day passes her heart opens up more towards this wonderful pet. Oh, and yes we do have laws for quite a few crimes in this country and on that note, well maybe the law breakers should have to face the tune, but they never will. Just free room and board and three meals a day provided by the tax payers.

There are a special little family....and to the person tha dumped them, go to hell!

to texgirl....I adopted a Golden Retriever-Labrador Mix from the Humane Society on Fredericksburg Road. Included in the cost was his neutering, shots, and heart worm medicine. They also give you 30 days of free veterinary care. In my dogs case they paid for a surgery on one of his eyes that would have been about $1000.00 if I had paid it. This ridiculously large animal is the finest friend I ever had and would have been a bargain at ANY price. $80.00 is NOT expensive for a dog. Must we have everything for free??? The Humane society has a special..I think on Tuesdays...where they will allow you to adopt larger dogs and dogs that have been there a long time for about $25.00. At $80.00 dollars, once you deduct the cost of the neutering and shots...you are paying about $35.00 for the dog. That $35.00 is all the shelter recovers to pay the cost of sheltering the animal till a new owner can be found.

Thor, live and let live, no matter what the species.

Harm an animal and your gonna pay dearly? Yeah, a few hundred dollars-maybe. I have NEVER seen enyone get jail time for abusing or killing an animal-ever. Community service and probation-maybe. Cmon bikesalot, I've been hit by three drunk drivers and no charges were ever filed against them either. No charges for the guy who rammed my daughter's car running from a robbery either. Bikers are hardly the only group who don't get justice. Can't you just be happy for the dogs when so many come to sad ends in this town.

That is sadly ironic, isn't it Bikesalot? And so seriously wrong, it's nauseating. As far as the adoption fees, depending on where you're adopting from, they can range from reasonable to entirely TOO expensive. You'd think the fees would be held to an acceptable range to encourage adoption, but once again, it comes down to the almighty dollar.

Texgirl - if a person cannot afford the adoption fee, that person should not be adopting an animal. "expensive" is all relative. Sir and another POV - there is plenty of room in the law books for everyone, dog abandoners, baby killers and bad drivers. No need to correlate one crime to the other.
Sir Bikesalot1:16 PM
You can wantonly slaughter two bicyclists with your pickup truck and walk. Harm an animal and you're gonna pay dearly.

This just goes to show how messed up our society is. It's ok for you to kill a human offspring but you better not harm an animal. Don't get me wrong, I love animals; I think they're cute and cuddly as much as the next guy. But the life of a human is much more valuable than the life of an animal, no matter the species.

It's always about the dollar everywhere. It may not be about the dollar with everyone, but you won't get very far anywhere without that dollar or a couple of them in your pocket. Anyway, it's amazing how some animals do strange and miraculous things. I hope it works out for all those dogs.

More people would adopt the pets from these agencies if they weren't so expensive!!!

Furry friends need permanent homes

A pet can brighten your life with companionship, laughter and love. And if you choose a furry friend that has been saved by a volunteer rescue group, you'll have the added satisfaction of knowing you're providing an "orphan" with a permanent home.
