A 2-year-old boy was attacked by a dog Monday morning at a North Side home.

San Antonio police Sgt. Devon Lambert said around 10 a.m., Jayden Elizondo was riding his tricycle in a back room of his parent's home in the 1700 block of San Angelo Boulevard when he rode into an unlocked back door and pushed it open.

The family's two dogs, both of which are mixed breeds, were contained in a fenced-in back yard, Lambert said. One was startled and bit Jayden on the head and face, police said.

He was taken to University Hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

While Animal Care Services was called to pick up both dogs, spokeswoman Lisa Norwood said the agency needed approval from the dogs' owners, Andrea Aguilar and Raymond Elizondo, to get them.

“Because they're owned animals, we need permission,” Norwood said, adding Elizondo has been in touch with ACS.

Jeanie Gawry, 49, said she was in the kitchen with the boy's mother when the incident took place. She said while the dogs have not been known to attack in the past, they are aggressive.

“I don't pet them,” she said. “His mother loves those dogs, but now she just wants them put down.”

The boy's parents probably would not face criminal charges, police said.

Nowhere does it say that these dogs were locked and kept in the backyard permanently. This is unfortunate and merely an accident. It does happen. Everyone is so cut-throat to have a guilty party here. Ummmmm, maybe the toddler was being a toddler and ummmmmmm, the dogs were being dogs? Give it a rest.

This story and a lot of the ignorant comments shows me just exactly why we have such an issue with dogs in this city! Poor dogs..now they must lose their lives because Grandma...who LOVES them...left them in the yard to fend for themselves! I guess we should be grateful that she didn't dump them somewhere instead. This is the story of dogs in San Antonio!! Dump them or throw them in the yard!! We will never even come close to being a no kill city!!!!
