The Animal Defense League has offered to provide care for the mixed-breed puppy that was thrown off a bridge this weekend.

Lisa Norwood with the city's Animal Care Services, said the ADL has an orthopedic veterinarian that will provide care free of charge for the dog's dislocated leg.

On Sunday morning, Mary Ybarra called police when she saw a boy put tape on the dog's mouth then throw it over the side of a drainage ditch in the 600 block of Rexford Drive, according to officials. The boy then ran off.

The only injury was the dislocated leg, officials said.

Norwood said she believes the puppy will be ready for adoption by Thursday, Norwood said.

Ybarra is hoping to take the puppy home and has started the application process, Norwood said.

Sadly, this story is so familiar to me as it happens on a daily basis. As an ACS foster parent, I frequently encounter both dogs and cats who are victims of horrendous abuse and neglect. One of my last foster puppies had hot oil poured over her little body. There are always dozens of loving animals at ACS that endure mistreatment and torture by humans. The citizens of San Antonio need to demand tougher cruelty laws and demand these laws be enforced. Until then, I encourage individuals to consider fostering or adopting from ACS or other rescue groups.
